What a Styku Scan Actually Measures

In thirty-five seconds on a rotating platform, a Styku scan captures millions of surface measurements and reconstructs your body in 3D. From that reconstruction it derives circumference at the waist, hips and thighs to about two millimetres of accuracy, with under a one per cent margin of error on those measurements — plus an estimate of body fat percentage.

The reason this matters is not the technology for its own sake. Body weight moves for reasons that have nothing to do with fat — fluid retention, the last meal you ate, hormones, even the time of day you step on the scale. Circumference and body composition do not move for those reasons. A scan shows you where change is actually happening, including in the weeks a bathroom scale refuses to budge.

It is worth being precise about what that comparison is worth. A scan measured against your own stored baseline tells you something a scale measured against nothing, or against a population average, cannot: whether the shape of your body is changing, not just the number on a dial.

It is equally worth being precise about what a scan is not. It does not diagnose a condition, predict a health outcome, or substitute for a clinical assessment — it measures shape and body composition, and nothing else. That is a narrower claim than a lot of scanning technology makes, and it is also an honest one.

How the Scan Actually Works

The mechanism behind the thirty-five seconds, in the order it happens.

01

A rotating platform and infrared sensors

You stand on a platform that rotates while infrared sensors scan your body from every angle, capturing millions of individual surface data points in the process.

02

A 3D reconstruction

Those data points are assembled into a 3D avatar of your body — a digital reconstruction accurate enough to measure from, not just a picture.

03

AI-derived measurements

Algorithms trained on that reconstruction extract circumference, length and body composition metrics in under a minute — the same measurements a tape measure and calipers would take, done faster and more consistently.

04

A report you keep

The output is a written report, emailed to you, with the underlying data stored securely so a later scan can be compared against this one.

How Accurate Styku Is, Compared With a DEXA Scan

DEXA is the gold-standard body composition scan. Here is how a Styku scan holds up against it, stated honestly.

A published correlation above 0.95

Body fat percentage from a Styku scan is calibrated against DEXA, with a published peer-reviewed correlation above 0.95 for fat mass — a strong agreement between the two methods.

Often within 2% of DEXA

In practice, that correlation translates to body composition results that are often within about two per cent of what a DEXA scan would report for the same person.

Derived, not directly measured

Worth being exact about this: a Styku scan predicts body fat from circumference data calibrated to DEXA. It is a highly accurate prediction, not a direct measurement — DEXA and its low-dose X-ray remain the direct method.

Validated beyond DEXA, too

Volume measurements from a Styku scan also validate well against air-displacement plethysmography, a separate body-composition method — the agreement is not limited to one comparison.

Figures as published by Ultimate IV and Wellness. A body composition estimate is a prediction calibrated against DEXA, not a diagnosis, and is not a substitute for clinical assessment.

“It does not diagnose anything, and it does not predict an outcome. It measures shape and body composition, precisely — and that is enough to see the change a scale cannot.”

What a Styku scan is, stated plainly

The Scale, Compared With a Body Scan

Both give you a number. Only one of them tells you what is actually changing.

What a bathroom scale tells you

One number — total body weight — that moves with fluid, food, hormones and the time of day, and says nothing about whether the change is fat, muscle or water.

What a Styku scan tells you

Circumference to within 2 mm, an estimated body fat percentage, and a report compared against your own stored baseline rather than a population average — with no radiation, so it can be repeated as often as it is useful.

What Happens During Your Scan

Wear form-fitting clothing and remove your shoes, accessories and jewellery before you scan — loose fabric and metal both interfere with the sensors reading your actual shape.

The scan itself takes about thirty-five seconds on the rotating platform. The full appointment, including sitting down to go through the results with staff, runs about fifteen minutes.

Your detailed report is emailed to you afterward, and the underlying data is stored securely so a future scan has something real to compare against rather than starting over each time.

Scanning is offered at our Bradenton clinic. If you are coming from Lakewood Ranch, plan the trip in — this is not a mobile service.

Your Scan Appointment, Step by Step

What to expect, in the order it happens.

01

Arrive and change

Form-fitting clothing, no shoes, no accessories or jewellery — anything that would interfere with the sensors reading your shape.

02

The 35-second scan

You stand on the rotating platform while infrared sensors capture millions of data points and build your 3D reconstruction.

03

Results review

Staff walk you through what the scan found — waist, hips, thighs and body fat percentage — while the full appointment runs about fifteen minutes.

04

Report emailed, data stored

Your report goes to your inbox, and the data stays on file so your next scan has a real baseline to measure against.

Why This Fits Inside a Weight-Loss Plan

A scale is a poor instrument for the thing most people actually care about, which is why body composition tracking exists alongside — not instead of — a weight-loss plan.

Objective, repeatable measurement is what keeps a weight-loss patient engaged in the weeks the scale will not move, because it can show the change is real even when the number on the dial says otherwise.

Styku scanning is not stated to be automatically bundled into every weight-loss plan — ask at booking whether it is included in yours. Either way, it sits alongside the medical weight loss program as a way of measuring what the plan is actually doing.

It is also relevant that the program is overseen by a physician with an advanced gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery fellowship — body composition, not just body weight, is the kind of detail that background is built to read.

Two Questions Worth Asking Before You Book

Both come up often, and the honest answer to each is short.

“Does a scan diagnose anything?”

No. It measures shape and body composition — nothing more. It does not diagnose a condition, predict a health outcome, or replace a clinical assessment, and no page on this site claims otherwise.

“Is scanning available at the Lakewood Ranch location?”

No — Styku scanning is offered at our Bradenton clinic, not at every location. If proximity matters to you, plan for that before you book.

Comparing Against Your Own Baseline

The value of a stored report is the comparison, not any single scan on its own. A first scan establishes where you are actually starting from; every scan after that is measured against it rather than against an average drawn from people who are not you.

That is also why the radiation-free part matters beyond being a safety detail. DEXA is accurate, but it uses low-dose X-ray, which limits how often it makes sense to repeat it. A Styku scan achieves comparable body-composition accuracy without that limitation, so it can be repeated as often as tracking progress actually calls for.

None of this replaces judgment. A scan is one input, read alongside the rest of a plan, overseen by the same clinical team as everything else here.

Overseen the Same Way Everything Else Is

Medical weight loss and the scanning that supports it are overseen by the same clinical team as every other service here — nothing about a body scan sits outside that structure.

Dr Jones’s background includes an advanced gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery fellowship, directly relevant context for tracking body composition rather than body weight alone in a weight-loss plan. Read more on his profile.

Medical director: Dr Stephen Jones — board-certified general surgeon since 2016, Northeast Ohio Medical University. Founder and lead nurse: Erica Barshay, RN BSN.
